Poggio’s laboratory hopes to crack the ARC obstacle by merging deep knowing and automated program-writing to train an agent to fix ARC’s 400 tasks by composing its own programs. Much of their work occurs in DreamCoder, a tool established at MIT that discovers brand-new principles while solving specialized jobs. Using DreamCoder, the lab has up until now fixed 70 ARC tasks, and Kantamneni this fall worked with master of engineering trainee Simon Alford to deal with the rest.

The weirder the sentence, the longer it takes a human subject to analyze its significance. For instance, putting a verb like “tripped” at the end of a sentence, as in “The female brought the sandwich from the kitchen tripped,” tends to throw off native English speakers. Though grammatically proper, the phrasing indicates that bringing instead of tripping is the main action of the sentence, developing confusion for the reader.

In three sets of experiments, Vani discovered that the greatest downturns came when the verb was placed in a way that sounded ungrammatical. Vani and her advisor, Ethan Wilcox, a PhD student at Harvard University, got similar results when they ran the experiments on a deep learning design.

“The model was ‘surprised’ when the grammatical interpretation is unlikely,” says Wilcox. Though the design isn’t explicitly trained on English grammar, he states, the results recommend that a neural network trained on reams of text effectively finds out the rules anyway.

Vani states she enjoyed learning how to program in R and shell scripts. She also gained an appreciation for the determination needed to conduct initial research study. “It takes a long period of time,” she says. “There’s a lot of idea that enters into each information and each choice made during the course of an experiment.”
